'THE' Best Mulled Wine Recipe

Dec 05, 2012

There is nothing more comforting in a cold winter evening than a mug of spicy, wonderful, Christmassy mulled wine. Served at each and every European Christmas Fair, there are many variations of this wonderful winter beverage. We are now sharing with you the most traditional Hungarian version - come taste it at one of our December events (check details here!) and make it at home for your friends and family!

* 1 bottle of dry red wine (750ml). Use a good quality wine, preferably something that's spicy on its own: Kékfrankos (Blaufrankish), Bikavér, Merlot, Cabernet Franc are all great choices. Don't be tempted to use cheap wines - as a rule of thumb, never make mulled wine from a wine you wouldn't drink on its own

* 200ml water

* 100g sugar

* 2 sticks of cinnamon (whole)

* 8 cloves (whole)

* 1 nutmeg (whole)

* 2 green cardamom (whole)

* 2 cm piece of sliced fresh ginger

* 2 oranges

* 1 lemon

1. Peel and squeeze one and a half oranges and the lemon, mix the orange and lemon peels and juice, sugar, water and all the spices together. You can grate some of the nutmeg or just throw the whole thing in the mix

2. Cook this into a thick syrup on medium heat (appr. 10-15 minutes) - it should already smell heavenly, turning your kitchen into a magical Christmas wonderland

3. Once the sugar is completely dissolved, take it off the heat and add the wine to the mixture. Cut the remaining half orange into 4-5 slices and add to the wine

4. Cover and let it sit for at least 5 minutes (the more the better) then heat it up on low heat. It has to be hot but never reach the boiling point

5. Serve it hot in Christmas mugs, put a piece of orange and clove in everyone's portion. Enjoy!
